Total Physical Awareness
This article is a body of work that I’m exploring and developing. It involves all of us, whether in physical form or not, as physical awareness is described from these viewpoints -
- being aware that you are inside a physical structure
- being aware that you are a physical structure
- being aware that you are outside physical structures
Through using these viewpoints, you can experience events taking place moment by moment (in a linear way) but also experience life happening everywhere in a beyond-time sense. Awareness of our experiences is enhanced simply by shifting our focus of who we are and what we are experiencing.
Let’s take an example. I was listening to a young girl speak about herself when she suddenly had a fit of laughing. “Oh-oh,” her friend said, “here she goes.” As the laughter continued, she composed herself, apologised, and then burst out laughing again. I listened to the melody of her laughter and at some point she was both laughing and crying. When she stopped, I asked her if she now found it easier to breathe. She did – and I understood that her uncontrolled laughter allowed her to energetically AND physically become more expansive, so that she could have enough space in which to express herself.
The point to being aware of what’s really happening around us is that we share the experience rather than sit on the sidelines trying to figure out what’s going on. With that girl -
- I sensed what she was trying to do
- My listening and respect enabled her to have the energetic freedom that she needed
- I understood her actions, which in turn gave her a profound connection to a deeper, more private part of herself
- I saw this as a breakthrough experience – that now she could be more of herself in front of others
- I valued her laughter and who she was being in the wondrous depths of it.
How is all of that possible, you might ask? The answer is in the depth of the connections that we are willing to make with others … going way beyond our previous surface interactions.
